Botox for Excessive Perspiration (Hyperhidrosis)

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition many people – teenagers, men, and women – experience, which is best known as severe underarm sweating. This condition occurs when sweat glands are overactive and work overtime to cool your body’s temperature.

If you have hyperhidrosis, you probably have to change your clothes frequently or layer your shirts, wear dark clothing to hide the circles of sweat, and avoid certain fabrics and styles of clothing. Chances are, you have already tried a variety of antiperspirants or deodorants, even prescription ones, yet you still sweat a lot.

The good news is that you have choices to treat this medical condition, and BOTOX® is one of those choices. BOTOX® is approved by the FDA to treat the symptoms of severe underarm sweating when medicines used on the skin (topical) do not work well enough. Best of all, BOTOX® works for six to seven months.

How does BOTOX® work? The BOTOX® neurotoxin treatment helps control the symptoms of severe underarm sweating by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands don’t receive chemical signals, the severe sweating stops.

BOTOX® injections are expected to temporarily stop the production of excessive sweat in the treated areas only. Sweat continues to be produced elsewhere. Where does the sweat that used to be produced in the armpit areas go? It doesn’t go anywhere or get backed up because the sweat simply is not produced in the areas treated with BOTOX®. The rest of your body is free to produce moisture normally.

Your BOTOX® treatment is not a cure; your symptoms will return gradually, and you will know when the time is right for another treatment. Dr. de la Torre will recommend a treatment strategy to ensure that you receive the best possible results from your BOTOX® treatment.

Will your insurance company cover the cost of BOTOX®? Most insurance companies will authorize BOTOX® treatment for hyperhidrosis. Remember, approval is not automatic and not all insurance plans cover treatment. Though most insurance companies will cover all or a portion of the treatment, Allura Skin, Laser & Wellness Clinic cannot guarantee that all or a portion of the treatment will be covered.

Schedule a consult appointment with Dr. de la Torre and see if BOTOX® is the treatment for you.
